Beautiful, powerful, fast. With a lineage tracing back more than 90 years to the 4CS from 1931, any new soft-top from the storied Trident brand could fail to be anything but. So it was that when the breathtaking Maserati GranCabrio Folgore received its global reveal on the evening of 15 April, in Modena, this stunning 4-seat convertible immediately caught the attention of customers and media alike.
And with good reason: not only is this the world’s first all-electric luxury convertible, it’s also the fastest, with a maximum speed of an incredible 180mph. And with even more power and torque than its ‘Nettuno’ twin-turbo V6 Trofeo stablemate – with three electric motors generating 761hp and an astonishing 1,350Nm – it’s also quicker too, covering the benchmark 0-62mph sprint in just 2.8 seconds.
Developed using learning from Maserati’s Formula E racing team, the tri-motor powertrain – two on the rear axle, and one on the front – ensures even greater agility through torque vectoring, and seamless switching between all- and rear-wheel drive for greater efficiency.
The state-of-the-art battery technology and 800-volt architecture – a Maserati-first – enable fast charging at 270kW (DC), which allows the driver to add 62 miles of range in just five minutes. Range of up to 280 miles (WLTP combined) is deeply impressive for such a high-performance machine.
Behind the wheel, drivers will appreciate the 12.2-inch digital instrument cluster, head-up display and the central 12.3-inch and 8.8-inch touchscreens, and built-in Alexa to help them keep hands on the wheel and eyes on the road, together with seamless smartphone connectivity via wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Little wonder that Top Gear was moved to say: “Maserati has finally revealed its GranCabrio Folgore, and in news that’ll surprise few, it’s gorgeous”, while in the US, Car and Driver said: “Curvaceous sheetmetal and a posh cabin make the GranCabrio Folgore a real stunner”.
